Fugitive Safe Surrender - Washington, DC encourages persons wanted for non-violent felony or misdemeanor crimes in the District of Columbia to surrender voluntarily to faith-based leaders and law enforcement in a church. Fugitive Safe Surrender recognizes that many offenders are looking for a way out.  The program provides an opportunity for individuals wanted for non-violent offenses to resolve their warrants and get on with their lives.  Surrendering within the confines of a church provides the assurance that they will be treated fairly and with dignity and respect.

Fugitive Safe Surrender has been successfully implemented by the US Marshals Service in six cities where over 5,000 people have surrendered.  The program is now coming to Washington, D.C.

You are eligible to participate if you:

  • Have a parole or probation warrant in the District of Columbia

  • Have an outstanding traffic warrant in the District of Columbia

  • Are wanted in the District of Columbia for a non-violent offense

  • Have no history of violence

  • Do not have an extensive criminal history

You ARE NOT eligible to participate if you:

  • Have a juvenile, child neglect or child support case

  • Have a domestic violence warrant

  • Have a warrant from Maryland, Virginia or another jurisdiction or a court other than the D.C. Superior Court

Offenders will receive favorable consideration for surrendering. The vast majority of offenders who surrendered in the previous Safe Surrender cities were allowed to return to their homes that day.

Defense attorneys will be available free-of-charge for anyone surrendering through the Fugitive Safe Surrender program.

Offenders are welcome to bring family with them.  Childcare will be provided.  Participants will be referred to social services as needed.
